The Andes hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship unberthing from Ushuaia, Argentina, towards the Canary Islands and Europe has gained remarkable media attention in spring of 2026. Here, we want to spotlight the most important facts about Andes hantavirus and hantaviruses in general. We want to emphasize and inform about the worldwide circulation of diverse hantaviruses and the necessity to strengthen efforts in virus characterization and the development of effective countermeasures against hantaviruses in general.
