Ernest Sheldon Friel (1887-1970): the first European professor of orthodontics.

Sheldon Friel was an Irish dentist who was the first specialist orthodontist to practise in the UK and Ireland and the second in Europe, having studied under Edward Angle in the USA. He became the first professor of orthodontics in Europe. Amongst other attributes, he pioneered the use of stainless steel for orthodontic appliances.
