From dental therapist to dentist: a dual perspective reflection on workforce integration in NHS dentistry.

Dental therapists are increasingly recognised as essential contributors to National Health Service (NHS) dentistry, yet their ability to work to full scope remains constrained. This article presents a dual perspective narrative from a clinician who has worked both as a dental therapist and, subsequently, as a dentist within the NHS. Drawing on first-hand experience, it explores the challenges faced by therapists entering practice, including limitations of prescription-based working, restricted training pathways and the impact of practice culture on professional autonomy. Recent regulatory developments such as medicines exemptions, contract adjustments and updates to Scope of Practice offer opportunities to enhance efficiency and patient access but require parallel investment in support and integration. Reflecting on the transition into dentistry and foundation training, the article highlights the importance of collaborative teamworking, mentorship and effective utilisation of the wider dental workforce to strengthen the sustainability of NHS dental services.
