Dynamic Life Cycle Assessment (DLCA) represents an emerging frontier in sustainability analytics, integrating temporal and spatial variability into traditional life cycle assessment frameworks to capture the dynamic nature of environmental impacts. This Perspective critically examines recent advances in DLCA, highlighting how digital innovations─such as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and digital twins, enable unprecedented resolution and responsiveness in sustainability assessment. Despite the transformative potential of these tools, expertise remains essential to navigate uncertainties, validate outputs, and ensure that assessments are meaningful for decision-makers. This critical role of expert judgment grounds the science in a real-world context, safeguarding both methodological integrity and stakeholder confidence. The synthesis underscores the balance needed between automated data acquisition and nuanced interpretation, which is essential to producing credible and relevant DLCA outcomes. The article further explores disparities in sectoral digital readiness and the challenges related to data governance, privacy, and regulatory demands. It emphasizes the importance of harmonized standards, adaptable frameworks, and targeted capacity building to bridge implementation gaps and accelerate adoption across diverse industries. Looking forward, DLCA’s potential hinges on embracing an integrated approach combining technology, governance, and human expertise. Through collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, DLCA can transition from a specialized methodology to a foundational tool for dynamic, transparent, and actionable sustainability management.
