The photocatalytic selective conversion of methane to high-value C2 products under mild conditions offers a sustainable pathway for utilizing natural gas and renewable energy sources. This Perspective summarizes recent advances in the photocatalytic conversion of CH 4 as the sole carbon source to high-value C2 products, including ethane, ethylene, ethanol, and acetic acid, which are of significant importance in the chemical and energy industries. The article innovatively proposes the key role of designing dual active sites in photocatalysts to achieve selective methane conversion to C2 products under mild conditions, thereby providing strategic insights for the rational design of such catalytic systems. Furthermore, potential approaches for developing more efficient photocatalysts for methane conversion to C2 product are proposed from three perspectives. Finally, the challenges and future directions in photocatalytic methane conversion to C2 products are discussed based on current progress and fundamental understanding.
