Polyimide aerogels (PIAs) exhibit excellent thermal insulation and fire resistance, offering significant application potential in various fields such as lithium-ion batteries. However, their pronounced thermal shrinkage at elevated temperatures and high hygroscopicity severely limit their broader applicability in harsh environments. Herein, a cost-effective strategy is proposed by incorporating highly thermally stable silica aerogels (SAs) into PIAs to fabricate SA/PIA composite aerogels. The results demonstrated that when the content of the SA reached 30%, the composite showed an optimal comprehensive performance. Compared to the pure PIA, the radial shrinkage decreased from 14.5% to 11.28%, and the peak of thermal decomposition temperature increased by 26.3 °C. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the SA/PIA composite aerogels showed a positive correlation with the SA content, with the water contact angle increasing from 46.1° to 98.3° as the SA loading increased. Notably, the SA effectively suppressed thermal shrinkage of the PIA, reducing the volumetric shrinkage at 300 °C from 92.4% to 58.4%. This work presents a feasible approach to mitigate thermal shrinkage and enhance the hydrophobicity of the PIA, thereby broadening its potential application in severe service environments.
