-substituted pyrroles from readily accessible feedstocks, such as alcohols, diols, and amines, catalyzed by a well-defined Fe(II)-catalyst featuring a redox-active azo-aromatic-1,10-phenanthroline-based ligand. Compared to existing approaches, this protocol enables access to diverse pyrrole derivatives, including penta-substituted pyrroles and complex polycyclic frameworks in good yields with improved atom economy and broad functional-group tolerance.
