A green, research-like metal–organic framework (MOF) laboratory project has been developed and implemented in the General Chemistry II laboratory course. Using water as the sole reaction solvent, HKUST-1 was synthesized at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with over 90% yield, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solvent-based and high-temperature methods. The project emphasizes the principles of green chemistry, material characterization, and environmental application through pollutant adsorption. Motivation data was collected using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory. Confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency measures supported the validity and reliability of the motivational assessment. Results indicated students’ perception of moderate to high levels of Intrinsic Motivation and Value/Usefulness, particularly among early academic levels. Qualitative responses further highlighted gains in green chemistry awareness, problem-solving, and career preparation. This work demonstrates the feasibility and pedagogical benefits of incorporating authentic research and sustainability themes into introductory chemistry curricula.
