In writing this book, I have relied primarily on written and published sources, but the research would not have been possible without the insight of key protagonists steering me to new materials and drawing my attention to particular events and people. I publish my list of informants and date of interview because I believe it aids readers to assess the scope of the research and some of its blind spots. Mentioning the names of those I interviewed does not indicate that they endorse my telling of their story, or even that they vetted my interpretations. The character of our interactions varied widely. Some were hours long interviews in person; in pandemic times, they were done through Zoom; a couple were short conversations on the phone. Most of these interviews were recorded and were partially transcribed. I do not quote from any of them.
