The Development of Neonatal Neurocritical Care

Over the past 30 years, advancements in our understanding of brain development have transformed neonatal care. The establishment of NNCC as a distinct specialty, accredited in 2022, underscores the necessity for a multidisciplinary approach involving neonatology, neurology, neurophysiology, nursing, and neuroradiology. The first dedicated program was initiated in 2008, paving the way for improved brain monitoring techniques, such as amplitude-integrated electroencephalography, continuous EEG, and near-infrared spectroscopy, which facilitate timely identification and management of neurological conditions. Effective NNCC programs require substantial investment in equipment, staff training, and the development of tailored protocols to address the unique needs of NICU patients. Evidence suggests that focused brain care is crucial for all neonates, particularly those with conditions like hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy and seizures. Integration of specialized care has demonstrated benefits, including reduced exposure to antiseizure medications and improved diagnostic accuracy. We highlight the essential components of NNCC programs and their role in optimizing neurodevelopmental outcomes for vulnerable infants.
