Sexual and reproductive health needs of female university students in Indonesia: A health-promoting university perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a global public health concern, particularly for young women in universities, as they are exposed to SRH risks, including unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and sexual violence. Addressing these risks requires a clear understanding of female students' specific SRH needs. However, empirical evidence on their SRH needs, particularly in Indonesian university settings, remains limited. This study explored the SRH needs of female university students in Indonesia to inform university-based SRH promotion. METHODS: This qualitative study involved interviews with 157 female students from four universities in Makassar, Indonesia, from August 2023 to January 2024. Data were analysed thematically using a settings-based approach and an empowerment framework. RESULTS: The study identified perceived barriers and SRH needs across information, education, resources, and decision-making which are underpinned by cultural challenges, stigma, and uneven support networks. This study recommended strategies for comprehensive and reliable SRH information and education, supportive institutional policies that improve access to on-campus resources, personal skill-building for SRH decision-making, and strengthened community engagement. CONCLUSIONS: Universities are critical settings that have the potential to empower young women to make informed decisions, advance SRH rights, and contribute to healthier and more inclusive academic communities.
