Japan revised its national government guidelines in 2026 to regulate research on human stem cell-based embryo models (SCBEMs). Based on the view that current SCBEMs are distinct from human embryos, the framework adopts relatively flexible oversight while prohibiting reproductive use and allowing future revision as scientific advances emerge.
