Piriformospora indica is a root-colonizing endophytic fungus with broad host adaptability. It has attracted considerable research interest owing to its dual capacity to promote plant growth and enhance stress resistance. It colonizes diverse plant species by modulating phytohormone signaling and systemically enhances the host’s physiological and metabolic networks. P. indica has been developed into a multifunctional bioagent that functions as a plant growth promoter, microbial fertilizer, biocontrol agent, and stress tolerance inducer. This article reviews recent advances in the use of P. indica for resistance induction and biofertilizer application in horticultural and field crops, providing new insights into its molecular mechanisms and potential for sustainable agriculture.
