Evolution confounds detectability in pathogen surveillance.

Pathogen surveillance generally assumes that detectability is static. However, pathogen evolution can alter diagnostic performance, causing detection probabilities to change over time. We discuss evolving detectability, its implications for surveillance and disease control, and the need to incorporate dynamic detection probabilities in pathogen monitoring frameworks.
