Mapping the future: Recent evidence informing postgraduate nursing education – A scoping review

INTRODUCTION: Postgraduate nursing education is a dynamic and evolving field, shaped by rapid advances in healthcare practices, technology and education. Complexity of healthcare and growing demand for highly skilled nurses highlight the importance of advanced education. Despite barriers such as staff shortages and growing clinical demands, evidence shows that postgraduate education enhances nurses' skills, knowledge, confidence and job satisfaction leading to improved clinical practice, leadership, and patient care outcomes. AIM: To identify key concepts from the literature pertaining to contemporary teaching and current pedagogical approaches to postgraduate nursing education. METHOD: A scoping review used the methodological framework described by Arksey and O'Malley (2005). A search of CINAHL, Scopus, and ERIC was undertaken to identify primary research studies, reviews, reports and commentaries on issues related to current postgraduate nursing education approaches. MAIN FINDINGS: Forty-one articles published between 2016 and 2024 were included in the scoping review. Four major themes emerged; 1. online learning, 2. teaching theories, strategies and methods, 3. simulation and technology, and 4. barriers and enablers to post graduate education. CONCLUSION: Students reporting higher levels of teaching presence and connections with educators and peers exhibit improved cognitive presence, deeper learning, and greater satisfaction-outcomes that support better clinical practice and critical decision-making. Frameworks such as the Community of Inquiry and CONNECT may enhance teaching presence, which in turn fosters cognitive presence and a sense of community. Embedding these frameworks into curricula and investing in educator training and online infrastructure are central to achieving stronger engagement and student satisfaction. Postgraduate nursing education also benefits from a range of evidence-based technological approaches, including chatbot and AI tools to improve student engagement, knowledge retention, and clinical reasoning.
