Thirty percent of patients diagnosed with low-risk pulmonary embolism were safely managed as outpatients.
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the proportion of patients diagnosed with low-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) in the emergency department (ED) and to determine how many of them were managed as outpatients.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study from May 2021 to May 2024. Inclusion criteria were patients aged ≥18 years, classified as sPESI Class 0, without right ventricular (RV) dysfunction, and with normal troponin levels.
RESULTS: Among 427 patients diagnosed with PE, 63 (15%) were classified as sPESI Class 0. Ten patients were excluded due to RV dysfunction or elevated troponin. Of the remaining 53 low-risk patients, 16 (30%) were managed as outpatients, None experienced adverse outcomes or recurrence.
CONCLUSIONS: Thirty percent of patients diagnosed with low-risk pulmonary embolism were safely managed as outpatients.
