Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) contributes to an estimated 4·71 million deaths annually and could cause up to 8·22 million annual deaths by 2050.1 Mass gathering events are increasingly recognised as drivers of AMR globalisation, facilitating microbial exchange between populations with distinct resistance epidemiology.2 The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest football tournament ever organised, with 48 national teams competing in three host countries: the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Millions of spectators, athletes, and support staff are expected to travel internationally during the tournament, creating one of the largest episodes of short-term global human mobility ever recorded.
