Carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter (CPA) are multidrug-resistant pathogens mainly associated with healthcare infections but are increasingly detected in wildlife exposed to human environments. In this study we report and characterize a carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter bereziniae strain related to fatal pneumonia and stomatitis in a rescued Burmese python (Python bivittatus) in São Paulo, Brazil. Whole genome sequencing revealed plasmid-borne blaNDM-1 and blaOXA-58 genes and phylogenomic analysis clustered the strain with human clinical isolates. These findings highlight the threat of carbapenemase-producing bacteria to wildlife and reinforce the need for a One Health surveillance approach.
