Clinical supervision in stuttering therapy: Theory, models, tools and evaluation.

PURPOSE: This clinical tutorial aims to review the evidence base for clinical supervision in general, and specifically in relation to stuttering therapy, and to discuss ways to apply models and tools to enable clinical supervisors to feel knowledgeable and confident to support their supervisees as effectively as possible. METHOD: The tutorial will define clinical supervision, explore the evidence for its effectiveness and describe the role and qualities of a supervisor. It will introduce several theoretical models of clinical supervision and how these might support the development of the supervisee across their career from novice to master practitioner. It will introduce some of the evaluation and feedback tools available to support the supervisory alliance, bearing in mind its application to stuttering therapy. Practical examples of clinical supervision in stuttering therapy will be shared to illustrate the process. CONCLUSION: This tutorial will enhance the evidence base in relation to clinical supervision in stuttering therapy by bringing theory into clinical practice and letting clinical practice inform research.
