A case of infarcted Warthin tumor misdiagnosed as Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma: diagnosis confirmed by MAML2 rearrangement with case report and literature review.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a common malignant neoplasm of the parotid gland. A rare pathological subtype, Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma, closely resembles infarcted Warthin tumor in clinical presentation and histopathological features, and contributes to a high-risk of misdiagnosis. Therefore, extensive experience in morphological diagnosis by pathologists and molecular testing results are crucial for accurate diagnosis. We report a case of infarcted Warthin tumor initially misdiagnosed as Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The diagnosis was subsequently corrected based on molecular testing results, in conjunction with clinical features and multi-institutional pathological consultation. We report this case to raise awareness of this rare entity and to avoid inappropriate clinical management.
