Cardiac Myxoma Causing Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction and Syncope in Rural Tanzania.

IMAGES: Left ventricular myxoma. CASE SUMMARY: A 20-year-old woman presented with recurrent syncope to a health center in rural Tanzania. Point-of-care ultrasound revealed a cardiac mass. The patient was transferred to a regional referral hospital, where a comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation revealed a left ventricular mass causing intermittent left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Surgical candidacy was confirmed, and she underwent surgical resection at the national hospital. TAKE-HOME MESSAGES: In resource-limited settings, point-of-care ultrasound, transthoracic echocardiography, and computed tomography contribute to the initial diagnosis and surgical evaluation for patients presenting from remote areas with surgical disease. Multidisciplinary teamwork and clear evaluation and referral protocols are essential to improve access to cardiac surgery.
