Utility of sublingual gland flap for mucosal defects after partial glossectomy and marginal mandibulectomy.

This study aimed to evaluate the utility of reconstruction with the sublingual gland flap for mucosal defects after partial glossectomy and marginal mandibulectomy. Between 2019 and 2024, reconstruction using sublingual gland flaps was performed after tumor resection in 27 patients with oral cancer (21 partial glossectomies and six marginal mandibulectomies). Flap effectiveness was assessed based on defect size, flap success, and postoperative oral functions (tongue pressure and eating). All patients achieved complete flap mucosalization. The largest soft-tissue defect measured 50 × 40 mm. Tongue pressure and eating functions recovered to presurgical levels due to minimal scar formation. Although a mucocele developed in two patients, no other complications occurred. No evidence of local recurrence was observed in any patient. In conclusion, this flap appears to be a valuable reconstructive option for mucosal defects after partial glossectomy and marginal mandibulectomy.
