Materials for the photo-electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to useful chemicals and fuels have been the subject of considerable interest in recent years. In order to maximise Cu2O nanocrystals' potential for photo-electrochemical applications that selectively convert CO2 into formates, we are focusing on a simple and repeatable way of synthesising them without the need for templates. We have focused on developing a facile and reproducible synthesis of Cu2O nanocrystals without the use of templates. Subsequently, we have enhanced their potential for photo-electrochemical applications, specifically for the selective conversion of CO2 into formates. Theoretical studies have been performed to identify the factors controlling product distribution, with a specific emphasis on enhancing the activation of the C O bond. Our synthesis approach involves the development of octahedral Cu2O nanocrystals through controlled reduction under ultrasonic irradiation. • Cubic Cu 2 O nanocrystals are reproducibly prepared via ultrasound without templates, highly. • Cu 2 O enables CO 2 conversion, supporting emission cuts and green chemical output. • DFT reveals how CO 2 reduction intermediates interact with catalyst surfaces. • Cu 2 O keeps its activity long-term, ideal for photo-electrochemical CO 2 reduction.
