The petroleum importance to human beings highlights the oil reservoirs' microbiology significance. It is crucial to develop remediation strategies, especially for sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Accordingly, this work aimed to isolate, characterize, and enumerate SRB from industrial water samples in Ahvaz and compare the results with meta-analysis. Following the enrichment at Postgate's B medium (PGB) and viable cell counting by the MPN statistical approach, a PCR amplification was performed. Beside verifying the SRB contamination via FeS formation, a high bacterial load was confirmed by MPN. The rare incidence of isolates, that is, Nitratidesulfovibrio liaohensis and Thermodesulfomicrobium sp., in oil-contaminated environs was confirmed by a meta-analysis report. Although the SRB rapid detection and precise quantification have been investigated extensively, this work could be considered a milestone for SRB distribution in Ahvaz, Khuzestan, as a significant oil reservoir. More studies could also complete the results to develop potent inhibitors regarding biocide resistance in region.
