Introduction : The transition from graduate medical school to residency is often considered as the most difficult transition by residents and supervisors. At our institution, a bootcamp for future surgical residents was set up in 2020. The aim of this study is to present the outcomes of the basic urological procedure workshops during this bootcamp. We specifically evaluated the contribution of video support to learning urethral and suprapubic catheter insertion through a comparative study. Methods: We were able to study two consecutive years of students (October 2023 and 2024). Starting in 2023, some basic urological procedure workshops were set up during the bootcamp: a urethral catheter insertion workshop, a suprapubic catheter placement workshop and a cystoscopy workshop. The urethral catheter insertion and suprapubic catheter placement workshops were comparative between two groups of students: a group with video support (Video group) one week before the bootcamp and another group without video support (Control group). Two members of the surgical teaching team performed the evaluation under blind conditions. At the end of the bootcamp, feedback was collected from the students. Therefore, a questionnaire and a Likert scale were sent to each student at the beginning of January, two months after the start of the course. Results : The cohort included 62 students, 32 from the 2023 class and 30 from the 2024 class. Concerning the urethral catheter insertion, the OSATS overall score was significantly better for the students in the 'video' group (medians 38.0 [36.0-40.0] vs 34.0 [29.0-40.0], p = 0.02). Concerning the suprapubic catheter placement, the OSATS overall score was not significantly different between the 'video' and the control group (medians 25.0 [19.5-37.0] vs 28.0 [22.0-38.0], p = 0.6). However, this comparison was underpowered (n = 11) and should not be interpreted as demonstrating equivalence. The outcomes of the questionnaire showed the importance of this workshop for the students. Conclusion: The implementation of basic urological procedure practice during our pre-residency bootcamp may help prepare future residents to perform urinary drainage. This bootcamp will be continued by consolidating the general foundations common to all future residents, regardless of their specialty.
