An interactive data tool for ecosystem service value assessment in the Great Barrier Reef

SYNTHESEAS (System for iNTegrating Human dimensions, Ecosystem Services and Economic Assessment for Sustainability) is an interactive R Shiny application developed by Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to catalogue and share metadata on datasets related to ecosystem service values in the Australian Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region. Designed primarily for environmental managers, policy-makers, and researchers, the platform supports more informed decision-making by providing a structured overview of data describing the uses, benefits, and values associated with GBR ecosystems. SYNTHESEAS users can explore and filter datasets by ecosystem service category (Provisioning, Regulating, Cultural), specific service types (e.g. recreational fishing), and major beneficiary groups (Government, Households, Industry, and First Nations Peoples). The tool also enables filtering along key components of the Ecosystem Service Value Chain (ESVC), including types of use, methods of quantification or qualification, economic multipliers, and derived values. By integrating diverse data sources and making them accessible through an intuitive interface, SYNTHESEAS facilitates transparent, inclusive, and spatially nuanced assessments of ecosystem service values that pertain to marine social-ecological systems.
