The shape of growing tissues is affected by their neighbours. A new study of the gynoecium in the flower of Arabidopsis thaliana shows how mechanical coupling preserves straight organ form and may support ovule production, while unpaired mechanical constraint converts longitudinal cell elongation into tissue-level bending or buckling.
