A newly discovered family of microbial autoproteolytic domains suggests that bacteria and animals may share a common strategy for responding to physical forces. Beyond uncovering an ancient protein fold, this work opens new questions about how microbes use mechanical cues to regulate adhesion, nutrient acquisition, virulence, and surface interactions.
