A new study characterizes an E3 ubiquitin ligase, LONG PETIOLE 1 (LOP1), as a missing piece in the phytochrome B (phyB)-PIF4 signaling cascade. LOP1 and phyB mutually stabilize each other and restrict PIF4 through proteasomal degradation, resulting in optimized plant growth and development.
