Model organisms are bargains with biology. Squid gave neurophysiology an oversized cable. Arabidopsis gave plant biology a weed that grew too fast to ignore. Planarians gave regeneration biology a body that could be cut into questions. Danionella cerebrum offers a different bargain still: a sexually mature vertebrate whose brain and body remain tiny, transparent and accessible.
