Bacterial anti-phage systems are often assumed to sacrifice infected cells, particularly when studied through population-level assays or effector overexpression. Huiting et al. show that a membrane-associated CBASS effector, examined at native expression levels, blocks phage production while preserving host-cell viability, challenging how immune outcomes are defined across bacterial defense systems.
