Psychological Autopsy Protocols - A Selective Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological autopsy (PA) is a methodological approach aimed at reconstructing the psychological and contextual factors leading to an individual's death, particularly in cases of suicide. This article provides a comprehensive review of Psychological Autopsy Protocols, examining their evolution across the decades from the first generation of psychological autopsy studies to a second generation focusing on methodological improvements. RECENT FINDINGS: Methodological aspects of psychological autopsies are discussed, emphasizing both strengths and limitations of the approach. The review then delves into specific PA protocols, showcasing prominent initiatives such as the National Suicide Prevention Project in Finland, McGill Group for Suicide Studies, Chinese PA Project, and the Spanish FRienDS project, as well as notable methodologies such as the SSIPA (Semi-Structured Interview for PA) and other psychological autopsy research efforts conducted globally. In conclusion, review consolidates knowledge on psychological autopsy protocols, providing a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers engaged in suicide prevention. The findings underscore the importance of refining methodologies and advancing the field to enhance our understanding of the aetiology of suicide.
