Background Nursing innovation requires educational approaches that support interdisciplinary collaboration, problem framing, and early-stage solution development. Innovation-Based Learning (IBL) offers a framework for addressing complex healthcare challenges through collaborative design and prototyping. Purpose To describe the design, implementation, and participant feedback associated with the Future of Nursing (FuN) Bootcamp. Methods This descriptive pilot program evaluation presents a five-day IBL initiative, involving participants from nursing, biomedical engineering, and design. Eighteen participants formed five interdisciplinary teams to address nurse-identified challenges including nurse burnout, nurses’ intuition, and electronic health record workflow issues. Teams developed five preliminary prototype-based technological solutions. Participants were invited to complete a mixed-format feedback survey; 10 completed the survey. Results Sixty percent of respondents identified interdisciplinary teamwork as the most significant learning outcome, and 60% reported that the methodology strongly supported the bootcamp’s thematic focus. Ninety percent indicated that the experience was worthwhile and that they would participate again. Open-ended feedback characterized the bootcamp as intensive, meaningful, and valuable for learning new approaches to problem framing. Challenges included teamwork intensity, cultural and language differences, unclear expectations, and the need for enhanced orientation and mentorship. Conclusion Findings suggest that interdisciplinary IBL is a feasible and promising framework for nursing innovation training while highlighting considerations for future implementation. Implications for practice Interdisciplinary innovation programs such as the FuN Bootcamp may help prepare nurses to engage in innovation and technology-enabled problem-solving. Structured mentorship, clear expectations, and enhanced orientation may strengthen participant experiences and support future nursing innovation initiatives.
