Phytochemicals are plant-derived bioactive compounds essential to human health and the maintenance of physiological functions. Phytochemicals like polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, alkaloids, and glucosinolates have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and hormone-regulating activities. This review aims to comprehensively classify phytochemicals and summarize their major sources, medicinal significance, and roles in human health and physiological functions. The current review provides a clear description of phytochemicals, including their classification, vegetative origin, mode of action, physiological functions, and their role in human health. Findings indicate that the phytochemical has various health benefits, including anticancer, cardiovascular disease prevention, diabetes prevention, and neurodegenerative disorder prevention. Phytochemicals’ biological action includes modulation of oxidative stress, immune modulation, endocrine homeostasis, and protection against cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and nervous system complications. With the developing needs for functional foods and natural therapeutics, recognition of the role of phytochemicals is gaining importance. This consideration also underscores their application in the pharmaceutical and food sectors, particularly in the production of health foods and nutraceuticals. Generally, the paper summarizes the prospects of phytochemicals for long-term support of human health and the prevention of lifestyle diseases.
