Abstract Stones have played a fundamental role in human society since prehistoric times, influencing various aspects of daily life. This interaction between humans and the abiotic environment has led to the appreciation of certain materials not only for their physical and mechanical properties but also for their sociocultural significance. In this context, some stones have come to be recognized as heritage (IUGS Heritage Stone) due to their presence in monuments, historical buildings, significant events, or as symbols of a particular region. This study aims to analyze laminated limestone (Cariri Stone) and its heritage value in its region of occurrence, the Araripe Basin, located in the Borborema Province, in northeastern Brazil. The analysis encompasses its petrographic, physico-mechanical, and cultural characteristics, as well as its applications. Based on the compilation of data and discussions presented here, it is possible to observe the stone’s relevance to scientific development and its significance to local communities.
