Science supporters as key actors in urban biodiversity research: stories and lessons from bird acoustic monitoring in coastal Chile

Abstract Urban ecology researchers have increasingly sought collaboration from the public, recognizing the relevance of expanded participation from diverse urban stakeholders. In the “ecology with cities” framework, public engagement is fundamental for data collection and sustaining other research processes. This article introduces and explores the roles of science supporters : individuals and institutions who do not participate in data collection but collaborate with researchers by providing logistical, social, or material support. Based on a bird acoustic monitoring project conducted in Greater Valparaíso, Chile, we report on partnerships with 24 science supporters, including local governments, public institutions, universities, businesses, and private households, that made the monitoring effort possible. We examine how this type of collaboration enhances ecological research in a metropolitan area and fosters connections through civic engagement, trust-building, reciprocity, patience, and gratitude. We conclude that science supporters are a foundational level within the continuum of participation methods in citizen science and that their contributions align with the values of ecology with cities through emphasizing collaboration beyond data collection and considering others’ perspectives about and needs in urban environments.
