Port-site hernia is a known complication of laparoscopic surgery, with risk influenced by several factors such as trocar diameter, abdominal wall location, and port-site enlargement for specimen extraction. Larger ports (≥10-12 mm) and umbilical or other midline sites demonstrate higher reported hernia rates, while patient factors such as obesity, smoking, diabetes, and advanced age may further increase risk. Numerous commercially available port-site closure devices have been developed to improve technical ease and consistency of fascial approximation, particularly in challenging patient populations. This review summarizes current evidence regarding risk factors for port-site hernia formation and provides a comprehensive catalog of currently available port-site fascial closure devices and their technical characteristics.
