Perinatal anxiety was common among Parturients and showed a strong inverse relationship with perceived labor control. These findings highlight the need for routine postpartum anxiety screening and early identification of women at risk for reduced labor control. Integrating structured psychological support and coping-enhancement strategies into maternity care may improve women's childbirth experiences and contribute to better short- and long-term maternal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal anxiety is a significant public health concern that affects maternal well-being and childbirth outcomes. Women's perceived control during labor is a key determinant of childbirth satisfaction and postnatal psychological health. Although maternal mental health has gained increasing global attention, limited research has explored the relationship between perinatal anxiety and labor control within the United Arab Emirates (UAE). PURPOSE: This study assessed perinatal anxiety levels and perceived labor control among antenatal mothers, examined associations with selected sociodemographic and clinical variables, and determined the correlation between these constructs using Roy's Adaptation Model. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used to recruit 169 antenatal mothers through convenience sampling at a UAE hospital. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS), and the Labor Agentry Scale (LAS) administered 24 hours postpartum. Analyses included descriptive statistics, ANOVA, chi-square tests, and Pearson correlation. RESULTS: Among participants, 40.8% exhibited mild-to-moderate anxiety, 39.1% severe anxiety, and 20.1% minimal anxiety. Regarding labor control, 45.6% reported moderate efficacy, 28.4% high efficacy, and 26% low efficacy. Age at marriage was significantly associated with anxiety (p < 0.05). Age, ethnicity, income, and parity were significantly associated with labor control (p < 0.05). Perinatal anxiety and labor control demonstrated a significant negative correlation (r = -0.579, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Perinatal anxiety was common among Parturients and showed a strong inverse relationship with perceived labor control. These findings highlight the need for routine postpartum anxiety screening and early identification of women at risk for reduced labor control. Integrating structured psychological support and coping-enhancement strategies into maternity care may improve women's childbirth experiences and contribute to better short- and long-term maternal outcomes.
