ABSTRACT Objective To highlight the stark contrasts in the integration, regulation, and practice of traditional medicine between the two countries (Israel and Japan). Methods This article chronicles the personal and professional journey of an Israeli acupuncturist studying Kampo medicine in Japan. Through personal experience as a visiting researcher at Keio University Hospital, Tohoku University Hospital, and Fukushima Medical University Aizu Medical Center, this paper reports on the observed systematic approach of Kampo, including the diagnostic method of Fukushin (abdominal diagnosis) and discusses the challenges and opportunities for non‐physicians seeking to study this field in Japan. Results While Traditional Chinese Medicine ( TCM ) in Israel is primarily practiced in private clinics with limited governmental regulation, Kampo medicine in Japan is formally integrated into the national healthcare system, covered by insurance, and taught in all medical schools. Additionally, the clinical utility of Fukushin was observed, and significant challenges for non‐physicians studying Kampo in Japan were identified. Conclusion The author's journey underscores the institutional legitimacy of Kampo and suggests a path toward fostering a greater exchange between Israeli TCM and Japanese Kampo, bridging two traditions that are similar in origin yet vastly different in their modern application and recognition. To address the challenges for non‐physicians, establishing short‐term clinical observation programs is proposed as a concrete solution.
