Henry Trimen: Under‐appreciated pioneer in the typification of Linnaean plant names?

Abstract In 1887, Henry Trimen published a paper summarising the contents of the Hermann Herbarium, in what is now the Natural History Museum, London (BM), in terms of the plant names published by Linnaeus. Trimen referred to the Hermann specimens as types of Linnaeus's names. A new analysis presented here indicates that many more names were effectively lectotypified by Trimen in the paper than have been attributed to him before. The application of various names requires to be altered in light of this re‐appraisal. For instance, Cerbera manghas should be applied to what is now known as Tabernaemontana dichotoma , leaving Cerbera venenifera as the correct name for the species formerly called C. manghas . Similarly, Bulbostylis capillaris becomes the correct name for B. barbata , and the species formerly known as B. capillaris must be referred to as B. antillana . The recognised types are changed for names including Canna indica , Clitoria ternatea , Musa paradisiaca , Myrtus cumini , Phaseolus max , Poinciana pulcherrima , Psidium guajava and Tamarindus indica . A total of 125 names are lectotypified here, including 117 at the second step, and 1 epitype is designated.
