ABSTRACT Polymeric surfactants are a unique class of polymers that exhibit amphiphilic surfactant properties, characterized by intriguing associations and self‐assembled structures in selective solvents. Their ability to form micellar aggregates having stimuli‐responsive properties in aqueous media enables the development of smart materials for various applications. The chemical structure of the polymer and its solution properties, such as viscosity and surface tension, are closely related to the physical properties and specific applications of polymeric surfactants. The lack of a systematic and comprehensive review of these interesting molecules presents an opportunity to highlight and consistently discuss important physical features, characteristic properties, synthetic methods, and potential applications. This review focuses on the superiority of polymeric surfactants over small molecule‐based surfactants, including their recent developments (2015–present) in synthesis, properties, and applications, such as in the areas of enhanced oil recovery, emulsion stabilization, dye dispersion, corrosion inhibition, protective coatings, hygiene, and personal and home care products.
