ABSTRACT Empathy is a core component of effective counseling, influencing both therapeutic relationships and counselor well‐being. The author extends Clark's integral model of empathy by expanding the subjective empathy modality and introduces the mindful empathic engagement (MEE) model as an extension of Clark's conceptualization of empathy. MEE integrates insights from neuroscience and counseling practice to illustrate how empathy operates through cognitive, affective, and somatic processes. The model highlights pathways leading to compassionate engagement or empathic distress, emphasizing the role of mindfulness in maintaining self–other differentiation. Additionally, the concept of “Reflecting Nearby” offers a practical empathic stance, fostering authentic connections while preserving boundaries.
