Abstract Background Many youth report experiencing climate distress in response to the impacts of climate change. There is limited knowledge, however, on how this distress arises and is managed on a daily basis, especially from the perspective of youth themselves. Aims This study used a photovoice methodology to explore the daily triggers of, and coping strategies for, climate distress used by 26 Quebec youth aged 13–25. Materials & Methods Data were collected over a 1‐month photo‐taking period, followed by individual interviews conducted by youth research assistants with lived experience of climate distress, and confirmatory focus group interviews. Results Thematic analysis revealed four daily triggers of climate distress: (a) causes of climate change, (b) environmental signs of climate change, (c) inaction, and (d) absence of control. Youth also identified four daily coping strategies: (a) taking action, (b) feeling connected, (c) shifting focus, and (d) cultivating hope. Discussion The findings of our participatory study highlight the importance of amplifying youth voices, and offer insights for how to support young people experiencing climate distress.
