Abstract Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), driven by renewable electrical energy, presents as a promising technology for converting CO 2 into valuable chemicals and fuels, thereby contributing to the establishment of a sustainable energy society. Metal catalysts play a pivotal role in CO 2 RR, but often encounter issues with insufficient activity, poor selectivity, and inadequate stability. Recently, extensive researches has demonstrated that the modification of using cost‐effective and easily accessible non‐metallic elements can significantly enhance the CO 2 RR performance, exhibiting great application potential. In this review, we will conduct a thorough analysis of non‐metallic element modified metal catalysts (NM‐MCs) toward CO 2 RR, including reaction mechanisms, synthesis methods, and optimization strategies. Besides, we delve into the latest advancements and challenges in the implementation of NM‐MCs in typical CO 2 RR devices, such as flow cells, membrane electrode assemblies, and solid‐state electrolyte reactors. Finally, future research opportunities are discussed aimed at advancing the industrial implementation of NM‐MCs in CO 2 RR.
