This chapter is a thematic exploration of responsibility, ethics, and integrity in the things we build. It is written for anyone – leaders, engineers, policy-makers, students, or concerned citizens – who wonders about the impact of what they do on other people, on society, and the future. Success meant delivering on requirements – the bridge held up traffic, the power plant came online, and the software system passed its tests. A system can meet its specifications and still fail in the bigger picture. In sum, integrity is the invisible infrastructure that holds any complex endeavor together. To truly build with purpose and ethics, we also need memory and foresight. A codebase might run for years; let it run in service of knowledge and empowerment, not division or exploitation. A policy might shape society; let it shape it toward justice and resilience.
